Exercise 1: Vocabulary

1. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch

Definition: Don’t assume or expect success before it has actually happened.

Example: “I know you’re confident about getting the job, but don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

2. A picture is worth a thousand words

Definition: Visual images can convey more meaning or information than words alone.

Example: “Instead of describing the sunset, I’ll show you a photo. A picture is worth a thousand words.”

3. Throw in the towel

Definition: To give up or surrender.

Example: “After numerous failed attempts, he decided to throw in the towel and quit the project.”

4. Don’t cry over spilled milk

Definition: There’s no use in worrying about something that has already happened and cannot be changed.

Example: “I made a mistake on the exam, but there’s no point in crying over spilled milk. I’ll do better next time.”

5. All ears

Definition: Paying full attention and eagerly listening.

Example: “Tell me your idea—I’m all ears and excited to hear what you have to say.”

6. On cloud nine

Definition: To be extremely happy or elated.

Example: “After receiving the job offer, she was on cloud nine.”

7. Fit as a fiddle

Definition: In excellent physical health and condition.

Example: “Despite his age, he exercises regularly and eats well. He’s as fit as a fiddle.

8. Take it with a grain of salt

Definition: To be skeptical or not fully believe something.

Example: “He tends to exaggerate, so I take his stories with a grain of salt.”

Exercise 2: Dialogue

Alex: Hey, Jessica, I can’t believe how well my job interview went today!

Jessica: That’s fantastic, Alex! But remember, don’t count your chickens before they hatch. They might still interview other candidates.
